CIAKUDIA -HALISI
Group Bio:
CIAKUDIA-HALISI is a newborn Congolese dance group with one guitarist who sings and writes songs about bringing awareness on the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the importance of working together to bring peace in this world. The word “CIAKUDIA-HALISI” is Swahili for positive. Through our performances we wish to convey positive messages of love to the world. We strongly believe that arts can be used to communicate hope, peace and joy to our surrounding society. Hence, CIAKUDIA-HALISI promotes social change and social justice. The group focuses on Congolese dance with a mixture of hip-hop, dancehall, street and freestyle. CIAKUDIA-HALISI had its first performance at a conference at York University on March 13th 2008 called “How much do you know about the Democratic Republic of Congo ?”. This event is an annual conference organized by the sisters Barbro Mutombo and Nancy-Josée Ntumba Ciakudia to bring awareness about the illegal exploitation of natural resources, war and genocide taking place in the D.R. Congo. The ladies had their second performance at Afrofest ( Toronto ) in July 2008. It is from this performance that the artists where asked to the opening show for the legendary group Kassav. CIAKUDIA-HALISI consists of 2 sisters: Barbro Mutombo Ciakudia (D.R. Congo ) Nancy-Josée Ntumba Ciakudia (D.R. Congo)
